Organization Overview<o:p></o:p>

The Public Library of Science (PLoS) is non-profit digital media open access publisher and advocacy organization. It employs more than 100 professionals in San Francisco, California and Cambridge, UK.  We are looking for a talented and creative individual to join our rapidly growing team in the role of Advocacy Director,<o:p></o:p>

Its mission is to transform scientific communications. Everything we publish is in “Open Access”--freely available online throughout the world, for anyone to read, download, copy, distribute, and use. <o:p></o:p>

PLoS has a global team comprising of editorial, production, information technology, marketing, administration and institutional relations/advocacy. Our work environment is team-oriented and rich in innovative ideas. PLoS’ distinguished board of directors includes eminent scientists, business leaders and entrepreneurs. <o:p></o:p>

In just eight years from our inception, we have established 14 websites (including 7 highly successful journals) that publish original content or organize and select pre-existing content for the benefit of different communities.<o:p></o:p>

Director of Advocacy Role<o:p></o:p>

PLoS is in the vanguard of a growing worldwide effort to change how research is communicated. The Director of Advocacy is a new position at PLoS and provides a rare opportunity to be a driving force in this historic transition.  PLoS began as an advocacy organization, and we have strong programs in institutional relations and policy development. We seek to expand the scope of these programs.<o:p></o:p>

The individual we seek will work across the organization at an executive level, leading and ensuring that our advocacy efforts are appropriately prioritized, targeted and executed to maximize our ability to further our mission. The Advocacy Director will have one report, a Senior Manager of Community Outreach.  <o:p></o:p>

We’re looking for a well-rounded advocacy professional with a background in Science and over 10 years relevant experience. The ideal candidate would be very familiar with the issues surrounding open content, barriers and benefits, but equally important is expertise and experience of broader issues concerning research communication (such as competing interests, open data and research assessment), public relations, and digital communications techniques. Ideally, they will also have a passion for scientific communication.<o:p></o:p>

Position Responsibilities<o:p></o:p>

·         Overall responsibility for the leadership and management of the PLoS advocacy program worldwide<o:p></o:p>

·         Define and implement the Advocacy strategy with an advocacy plan and position platform<o:p></o:p>

·         Own and manage core programs: policy development, funder policy, coalition and network building, communication and outreach, speaker bureau, events and scholar societies<o:p></o:p>

·         Serve as company spokesperson and representative along with PLoS advocacy champions<o:p></o:p>

·         Contribute regular writings to support PLoS advocacy for conference presentations, website and blog entries, public policy and internal education<o:p></o:p>

Qualifications, Competencies and Experience  <o:p></o:p>

  • Career trajectory that reflects at least 10 years of relevant hands-on experience with at least 5 years management experience<o:p></o:p>
  • Background in Science<o:p></o:p>
  • Demonstrable ability to create and drive an overall strategy <o:p></o:p>
  • Outstanding communication skills both verbal and written<o:p></o:p>
  • Enthusiastic and creative approach to problem solving<o:p></o:p>
  • Strong interpersonal skills <o:p></o:p>
  • Ability to lead through influence<o:p></o:p>
  • Experience in online publishing and open content<o:p></o:p>
  • Experience in advocacy and public policy<o:p></o:p>
  • Preference for location in San Francisco<o:p></o:p>
